When Marrakech gets too hot or too loud, locals and travellers alike head west — about three hours across the Haouz plain to Essaouira, the relaxed white-and-blue port town on the Atlantic. It is one of the easiest day trips in Morocco, and one of the most rewarding. Here is what the day actually looks like.
The road there: argan country
You leave your riad around 8:00 and cross the flat Haouz plain. About halfway, the landscape changes — this is the only region in the world where the argan tree grows wild, and you will almost certainly see the famous goats perched in the branches, climbing for the nuts.
Most day trips include a stop at a women’s argan cooperative, where you watch the kernels being cracked and pressed into oil — culinary oil for amlou and cooking, cosmetic oil for skin and hair. It is a genuine working cooperative, and buying here supports the women directly, with no obligation.
The medina: UNESCO-listed, without the stress
Essaouira’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — but unlike Marrakech or Fes, it is small, laid out on a near-grid 18th-century plan and almost impossible to get lost in. Shopkeepers are noticeably more relaxed here; it is a good place to browse thuya wood marquetry, jewellery and textiles without hard bargaining.
Your guided introduction covers the old Mellah (Jewish quarter) and the Kasbah before you are left free to wander on your own.
The Skala ramparts and the port
The Skala de la Kasbah — the sea bastion lined with old bronze cannons — is the postcard shot: waves breaking against the ramparts, gulls overhead, the Îles Purpuraires offshore. Fantasy fans may recognise the walls as Astapor from Game of Thrones.
Below, the fishing port is still a working port: bright blue boats, nets being mended, the day’s catch unloaded by mid-morning. For lunch, do as the locals do — pick a grill stall near the port, choose your sardines, sea bream or calamari, and eat them minutes off the boat. Lunch is not included in the tour, and that is a feature: you eat what you choose.
The afternoon, at your pace
The afternoon is free. A few ideas:
- Coffee or mint tea on Moulay El Hassan square, with the Gnawa musicians who made this town their cultural home.
- A walk along the wide sandy beach — pleasant for a stroll, though the famous trade wind makes it more of a surfing beach than a sunbathing one.
- More browsing in the medina, or the small art galleries Essaouira is known for.
Your driver picks you up mid-afternoon and you are back at your Marrakech riad around 18:00.
Practical tips
- Bring a layer. Essaouira is nicknamed the Windy City of Africa for a reason — even summer afternoons can be breezy and noticeably cooler than Marrakech.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the medina’s cobbles and the rampart steps.
- One day is enough for the medina, port and ramparts; surfers and slow travellers stay a night or two.
