Private vs shared desert tours in Morocco: an honest comparison

← All articles

Before we start, full disclosure: we only sell private tours. So read this knowing where we stand — but also knowing that we will tell you honestly when a shared tour is the smarter choice for you. Sometimes it is.

What “shared” actually means

A shared (or group) desert tour puts you in a minibus with strangers — typically 8 to 17 people — on a fixed itinerary with a fixed schedule. Same Marrakech–Merzouga route, same camp, same camel ride; the difference is everything around it.

A private tour is the same route with the vehicle and driver reserved for your party alone.

The honest comparison

Shared tour Private tour
Price Cheapest per person — often half or less for a solo traveller Priced per vehicle; better value as your group grows
Pace Fixed — the bus leaves when the schedule says Yours — leave earlier, linger longer, skip what bores you
Stops Set list, plus (on the cheapest tours) commission shops Any viewpoint, village or café you fancy — photo stops on demand
Lunch Usually a set restaurant chosen for group logistics Wherever you want — ask the driver where locals eat
People Strangers; you meet people, for better or worse Just your party and a driver who works only for you
Pick-up One route collecting everyone — first aboard waits longest Your riad, your time
Comfort Full minibus, middle seats exist Legroom, your luggage, your playlist

When the shared tour is honestly the right call

When the private tour earns its price

The commission question — ask it either way

Whichever format you book, ask one question: “Do we stop at shops or restaurants where the driver earns commission?” On budget group tours these stops are how the low price is subsidised — the argan cooperative, the “obligatory” scarf shop, the set-menu restaurant at double the local price. On honest private tours there are none, because the driver answers to you alone. It is worth paying attention to which category your operator falls into.

Our honest conclusion

Shared tours are not a scam — they are a trade. You exchange flexibility and privacy for the lowest price in the desert, and for a solo backpacker that is often the right exchange.

Private is worth the difference the moment the trip is about your experience rather than the logistics of a group: couples, families, photographers, seniors — or simply anyone who has flown this far and wants the desert on their own terms.
