Merzouga or Zagora: which Sahara desert tour fits your Morocco trip

← All articles

Every traveller short on time ends up asking the same question: Merzouga or Zagora? Both are sold as Sahara desert tours from Marrakech, both include a camel ride and a night in a camp — but they are very different experiences. Here is the honest comparison.

The short answer

Zagora: the desert within reach

Zagora sits about 360 km south-east of Marrakech — roughly 6 to 7 hours by road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, past Ait Ben Haddou and down the Draa valley, Morocco’s longest river and one of its largest palm groves.

The honest caveat first: Zagora is the edge of the Sahara, not its heart. The landscape is mostly hamada — stone desert — with smaller dunes around the camps. If your dream photo is an endless sea of giant orange dunes, this is not quite it.

What you do get is real: a proper camel ride at sunset, a private tent in a Berber camp, dinner around the fire with nomad drumming, and a star field you will never see in a city. For a weekend, it is a genuine desert night.

Best for: travellers with exactly 2 days, families with young children (shorter transfers), anyone who wants a taste of the desert without the long haul.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the big dunes

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech — 9 to 10 hours by road, which is why 3 days is the sensible minimum and 4 is comfortable. The payoff is Erg Chebbi: a true sand sea with dunes rising to roughly 150 metres, among the tallest in Morocco.

The classic 3-day route also adds sights Zagora does not have: the Todra gorges with their 300-metre limestone walls, the Dades valley, and — depending on the direction — the market town of Rissani or the palm-fringed Ziz valley.

The sunset camel trek is different in scale too: an hour’s slow sway into dunes that genuinely block the horizon. Sandboarding if you want it, sunrise from a dune ridge, and a silence you can actually hear.

Best for: anyone with 3 or more days who wants the definitive Sahara experience — photographers, couples on a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Our honest recommendation

If you have the time, go to Merzouga — the driving is long, but the dunes are what you pictured when you booked the flight. If two days is truly all you have, Zagora is absolutely worth it and far better than skipping the desert entirely.

Travelling between Fes and Marrakech anyway? A one-way desert route solves the driving problem elegantly — see our 3-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech.
